Inspector Paul Davies

Your latest Blog from your local Inspector, Paul Davies, who covers the Pill and Bettws area

This is my first blog having started as the Inspector in Newport West early in April. My previous role was as a Detective Inspector on the Regional Organised Crime Unit coordinating the response to Child Sexual Exploitation.

April has seen a busy month for us following some great work by PC Paula Spence and the team, who were able to close down an address on Ruperra Street in Pill. This address had caused significant issues for our communities as there were reports of drug taking and other crime related matters. Paula worked with the owner and partners and as a result the premises has now been closed and boarded up. This closure has been reported on positivity in the local press and has highlighted how we listen to and respond to the concerns of our communities.

Last week saw the second phase of Op Jewels. This was a coordinated day of action where 27 people were arrested for dealing class 'A' drugs in the Newport area, with 24 of those now charged. A number of the arrests related to suspects from the Newport West area.  Again this was a perfect example of listening to the concerns of our communities and providing a strong response. There was a huge amount of praise for this operation from the communities, this support was really encouraging. I also want to thank the local officers and the support we have had from our colleagues in the West of the Force who have been supporting us with extra patrols in the area.

In April two of our Community Support Worker colleagues in Duffryn were assaulted. Following an investigation five suspects were interviewed, one has now being charged with assault and the other four are currently on police bail pending further enquiries. One of our Police Constables was also subjected to an assault whilst trying to arrest a male in the Maesglas area. The local male has since been arrested and charged with assault and remanded by the court. The officer spent over a week in the Royal Gwent Hospital but I am pleased to report he is recovering well with great support from his family, friends and colleagues. We all wish him well.

We are still continuing with Operation Absorb which is a multi-agency operation is looking to clean up the streets in and around Pill. Part of this work includes building relations and working alongside a large number of partner agencies on a wide range of issues that affect the local community. In addition we are continually working with our colleagues in Fire and Rescue Service to respond to the issue of fires being lit, as well as our colleagues in partner agencies to tackle issues relating to Anti-Social Behaviour.

Our neighbourhood teams have been really busy in their wards encouraging the communities to respond to the 'Your Voice' priorities. CSO 176 Stephen Metcalfe-Davies is now holding surgeries at Newport City Homes and Bettws Shopping Centre. This is a great opportunity for members of the community to discuss issues that are impacting upon them. Dates for the surgeries are:

  • Thursday 11th May 2017 3pm-4pm

  • Monday 12th June 2017 3pm-4pm.

  • Our other ward surgeries will continue as normal.
