Last week saw nearly 200 members of staff gathering at the Parkway Hotel for the Gwent Police Mental Health and Wellbeing Awareness Day.

The event saw a number of expert speakers giving informative and interesting input that was relevant and helpful to staff at all levels across the organisation.  These included a talk by nutritionist Joanne Corvini who gave insightful advice into how your body is affected by stress and the reasons why you reach for that bar of chocolate or packet of crisps and how to combat that.

Another matter that affects many people is back and shoulder pain.  David Byfield of the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (USW) shared some helpful statistics and advice in combatting this problem.  Additionally, Mark Peart and Esmee Gummer, contestants from the last series of SAS Who Dares Wins, were a resounding success giving some great motivational tips.  There was also some fantastic advice given by the internal support teams available to the Force.

It is of utmost importance that the wellbeing of officers and staff is looked after by the organisation and, in turn, this ensures they are in the best possible position to respond to and protect the communities of Gwent.

Chief Constable Pam Kelly said “Feedback that I’ve received from the Wellbeing Day hosted in The Parkway Hotel has been superb. The organisation was first class and I know how helpful these sort of days are. Following on from this I’m now keen to host a further Wellbeing Day as soon as possible.

“Wellbeing is a priority of mine and the wellbeing of our officers and staff is absolutely critical. A big thank you to all those involved in the organisation and delivery of the day. I can confidently say that you have, without doubt, positively impacted people in the room that day.”
