Gwent Police Ethnic Minority Association (GEMA) was originally established in 1999 as Gwent Black Police Association, a support network for black and minority ethnic (BME) staff and officers.
The change of name to GEMA in 2014 reflects the growing number of ethnic minority staff and officers from a diverse range of ethnicities.
The 'Association' or 'GEMA' has the full support of both the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Chief Constable and is strategically involved in discussing and advising the Force Policy regarding Race, Equality and Diversity, Stop & Search, Staff Welfare and engagement with BME communities. It is also our aim that we better reflect all the Gwent communities we serve in line with the Peelian principle that "the police are the public and the public are the police."
We are currently working with the College of Policing on the BME Progression 2018 programme to improve the recruitment, development, progression and retention of BME officers and staff. GEMA is also linked with similar Associations across Wales, in South-West England, and nationally.
The vision of GEMA is to be 'BRAVE':
- Be Engaged in BME Communities and lead on reducing Race Hate Crime
- Raise our profile locally, regionally and nationally
- Agitate for Gwent Police to better reflects the ethnic minority communities it serves
- Value and support our members
- Empower and progress BME staff & officers in Gwent Police
